Faculty and students of Saint Mary’s University (SMU), Institute of Natural Sciences, joined the international and national indigenous peoples’ groups in a learning exchange visit to Kalahan Educational Foundation (KEF) in Imugan, Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya on January 12-13, 2010.
The learning exchange visit focused on facilitating the sharing of good practices on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD), sustainable forest management, and the promotion of traditional knowledge on biodiversity. Important activities were accomplished in the learning exchange visit, such as: (1) orientation to the KEF as a foundation, its organization, programs and projects; (2) lecture on resource mapping and carbon stock calculation; and (3) on-site demonstration on carbon sequestration calculation.
The event was sponsored by Tebtebba Foundation, Indigenous Peoples’ International Centre for Policy and Research, a non-government organization based in Baguio City. The organization chose Imugan as a model community for sustainable forest management and for its pioneering efforts in conducting research on biodiversity identification and carbon stock calculation since 1994.
SMU’s participation was made possible through a standing Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Kalahan Educational Foundation (KEF), where a mutual sharing of activities on research, extension, and special projects beneficial and agreeable to both parties are stated.
Participants from SMU were Mr. Robert S. Aceret, Mrs. Alice Z. Jubay, Mrs. Arlene L. Tabaquero - faculty members of the Institute of Natural Sciences; Mr. Leonard Clemens L. Cadoy of the IKAT Institute; Mr. Armand Carl Dulay, Miss Rebekah Antoinette Munoz and Miss Kimberly Magangat – BS Biology students.
